An Historic Season

What a month it has been for the winter sports enthusiasts of Colorado! While this winter may be dragging on for some, the frigid temperatures have been made worth it by a happy supply of powder days. Even those who are confined to predominantly weekend riding are getting their fair share. There is a great deal of buzz among the skiers and riders across the state and beyond who have endured the limited snowfall of the past few seasons and are welcoming these terrific snow conditions.

To give some perspective, and hopefully keep the momentum going into the rest of March we wanted to share some snow stats. These numbers to the right reflect the snow accumulation at local ski resorts within just the last 72 hours. And boy have we been hit with a ton of snow.

Heck, there were 4 avalanches within the last week that actually thundered onto the madness that is I 70 and buried vehicles. Watch here as an avalanche roars onto the interstate. Just yesterday the National Avalanche Center escalated the avalanche danger in Colorado to extreme, due to the fact that the first week of March the state produced at least 346 avalanches. All the snow combined with extreme wind makes our mountains more susceptible to avalanches.

The good thing is the ski resorts know what they are doing and how to keep the mountains safe. Some lifts and runs have been closed due to conditions. Even A-Basin closed today due to extreme avalanche danger - but they have been hard at work to prep the mountain to reopen tomorrow.

The snow forecast is predicting even more snowfall to continue all throughout next week as well. You can expect the powder to keep accumulating for the time being. Time to load up your gear and head up to the mountains and see what all the buzz is about. If you are a newbie you’ll welcome the extra fluff while you are learning and taking some falls. And for the seasoned riders enjoy some of the best conditions of the year. Perfect for pushing yourself to try new things. Just remember to stick to the maintained slopes and avoid backcountry skiing and it should be all fun and games.
